 Summary

Jersey made light of the first half dismissal of lock Nathan Hannay to inflict a heavy defeat on a Cambridge side still smarting from last week’s loss at Ealing.

The visitors were ahead inside 30 seconds as Guy Thompson capitalised on poor fielding of an awkward bounce in the home 22, and though Michael Le Bourgeois missed the conversion, his penalty four minutes later made amends.

It was still an even contest at that stage, and Greg White’s stunning midfield break put Anders Mogensen away at speed to touch down, and Tom Wheatcroft’s conversion left a point between the teams.

Even when Le Bourgeois and Wheatcroft swapped penalties, the game seemed nicely poised.

There was, however, a taste of things to come as David McCormick shrugged off three tackles to wriggle over the line. But a further Wheatcroft penalty in injury time , awarded after an ugly incident between Hannay and Darren Fox, must have left the Islanders wishing the referee had blown for the half after Le Bourgeois dropped a goal in the 40th minute.

Fox’s card was yellow, Hannay’s red, and a long second period was in prospect. Jersey, though, hit their stride after the restart, and two more tries from Thompson, plus one each from Edward Dawson, Miles Landrick, and Le Bourgeois put the result way beyond doubt.

Bob Crooks said afterwards: "We seemed to lack that desire to own our game and be responsible for our game and say “That isn’t good enough”… Jersey played some nice rugby, and they’re probably the best side we’ve played this year, and their 7 (Guy Thompson) was the best player I’ve seen all season. Credit to them – they deserved their win. But now it seems like we’re a bit inhibited. The team need to understand their wider responsibilities – to the ball boys, the players that do the curtain raisers, the sponsors…we need to re-group, and find a performance to take to Cinderford next week.”
