In an emotional game, enjoyed by both players and spectators alike, Cambridge gutsed it out, to beat Coventry today by 35 points to 27.
Coventry opened the scoring with a penalty goal but Will Lawson replied almost immediately with a try. Gareth McComb then went over for a converted try followed by Ben Cooper (now the first), scoring after continuous pressure. All three tries were converted by Elliot Bale but Coventry could only manage a drop goal by half-time.
Coventry opened the second half more spritely, but the Cambridge defense and tackling were simply magnificent. However Coventry managed two tries to bring their score up to 20 points, before Elliot Bale replied with another try which he also converted. Coventry were awarded a penalty try to see Cambridge leading by one point only. With 4 minutes to play Cambridge exerted tremendous pressure on the Coventry line and following a number of scrums the home side were awarded a penalty try to run out winners by 35 points to 27.
The Carter Jonas man of the match was awarded to the whole Cambridge team as a tribute to their commitment to the cause, which to a man, they richly deserved. Unfortunately this was an emotional farewell to several players now destined for pastures new.
