CRUFC 23 - 21 Tynedale

In a rumbustious game with both sides contributing to open running rugby, Cambridge emerged victors against Tynedale by 23 points 21. This was despite having to play with only 13 men for nearly 10 minutes of the second half.

Tynedale opened the scoring after 17 minutes with a converted try. Successive tries by Tom Fidler and Ien Ascroft-Leigh coupled with a penalty by Tom Wheatcroft saw Cambridge up by 13 points to 7 at half time.

Danny Hunter and Steve Hipwell were yellow carded in the second half during which there was a second converted try by Tynedale before Tom Wheatcroft kicked a penalty to see the score 16 to 14.

With a full complement Ien Ascroft-Leigh scored a try with Wheatcroft converting to see the last ten minutes with Cambridge up by 23 points to 14. Tynedale then scored a converted try but Cambridge held on for the final minutes to emerge winners by 23 points to 21.

The Carter Jonas Man of the Match was Steve Hipwell, which was a good way both for him and the team to start off their home matches for 2012.
